Capturing Value from Commercial Building Waste Streams

Capturing Value from Commercial Building Waste Streams

We collectively need to tap into the large (and growing) waste stream of construction & demolition
debris coming from the 87 billion SF of office space and other commercial buildings around the US. Not
just from a waste reduction/deconstruction standpoint, but also from a circular economy, embodied
carbon, and new business development stance. Doors Unhinged has been exploring this idea with
commercial door systems, and we would like to see this work expand to other regions and with other
materials.

Andrew Ellsworth is Founder & CEO of Doors Unhinged, the first US company to exclusively sell
reclaimed commercial doors systems. Mr. Ellsworth is committed to circular economy
and zero waste principles, and hopes to see a larger movement in commercial building
material reuse to emerge as a result of his work at Doors Unhinged. Prior to starting
Doors Unhinged, Mr. Ellsworth has worked in sustainable enterprise development,
LEED consulting, and healthy high-performing schools. He served for six years on the
board of Construction Junction, and has a Bachelor of Architecture from Carnegie
Mellon University.
