British Land Commits to Net Zero Carbon Portfolio by 2030

British Land, one of the largest property development companies in the United Kingdom, announced in June a strategy to achieve net-zero carbon across its entire portfolio through a combination of energy reductions, carbon pricing, and offsets. In addition to operational energy, the plan addresses embodied energy, targeting 50% less embodied carbon at their developments (against the 2019 baseline). A main tenet of the strategy is the prioritization of retrofitting existing properties rather than building new.

The plan also commits the company to a place-based approach to development, mentioning the creation of local charters around specific issues and continued collaboration with stakeholders.
