Massachusetts Publishes Reuse Economy Study

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and Tufts University recently undertook an economic and spatial impact analysis of the reuse sector in Massachusetts to aggregate data as a baseline measure for future strategic planning initiatives. The study addresses three research questions:

  1. What is the current state of the reuse economy in Massachusetts, excluding the automotive industry?

  2. What geographic areas (counties) of the state currently have the most/least reuse activity?

  3. What ways can MassDEP support and grow the reuse economy?

The report will be used to develop a Strategic Reduce and Reuse Action Plan for Massachusetts. The report is critical, as the impacts of the reuse sector have been understudied in comparison to recycling.
